How to Fish Beginner Guide

A practical first-hour route for learning the catch, fight, sell, upgrade, and island progression loop in How to Fish.

Short bearing

Learn one complete catch-and-sell loop, buy only the upgrade that removes your current blocker, and keep every quest or boss item until its owner accepts it.

Your first ten minutes

Finish the opening sailor tutorial, complete one full catch-and-sell cycle, and learn which item is ordinary loot and which item advances a quest.

  1. Follow the opening sailor objective before wandering away to grind. It teaches the interaction sequence the first island expects.
  2. Catch one creature, finish the combat step, and inspect what remains before deciding to sell it.
  3. Locate the merchant and turn only ordinary catches into your first spending money.
  4. Keep any distinctive quest or boss item until the requesting NPC accepts it.
  5. Prepare for the Spider Crab only after the tutorial objective and your basic combat setup are ready.

The core loop

How to Fish repeatedly asks you to catch, fight, inspect, sell or preserve, upgrade, complete an NPC request, defeat a boss, and hand in its result.

StageQuestion to answerSafe beginner rule
CatchAm I using the location and lure required by the current objective?Change one variable at a time so a failed cast is diagnosable.
FightCan my current weapon finish the creature without consuming all my recovery items?Create room first; damage is wasted if terrain traps you.
InspectIs this ordinary loot, a rare variant, or a quest/boss item?Inspect before selling, cooking, gambling, or leaving it behind.
SpendWhich single purchase removes the next blocker?Progression equipment comes before optional gambling or cosmetic spending.
QuestWhich NPC created this objective?Return the requested item to that NPC; a boss kill alone may not unlock travel.
TravelDid the hand-in produce keys, coordinates, or another route signal?Confirm the unlock before starting an unrelated grind.

Upgrade without wasting money

Buy against the next concrete failure: damage, survivability, transport, inventory space, or the required lure—not against the entire shop at once.

  • If normal creatures take too long to defeat, improve the weapon you can already use reliably.
  • If a boss attempt fails because you run out of room or recovery, preparation matters more than a marginal damage purchase.
  • If an NPC quest provides a special trigger, do not replace it with a shop lure unless a current source explicitly says they are interchangeable.
  • Treat roulette and slot-machine spending as entertainment, not guaranteed progression money.
  • Keep reserve money for a replacement trigger or recovery after a failed attempt.
DifficultyOfficial patch 1.0.9 changeWhat it means for a guide
EasyCreatures have 25% less health and deal 50% less damage.A low-cost setup can survive encounters that require more preparation on Default.
DefaultSame baseline used before the difficulty option was added.Use this when comparing older launch-week routes unless they state otherwise.
HardCreatures have 25% more health and deal 25% more damage.Bring a larger margin for damage, healing, and failed attack windows.

Mistakes that delay progression

Most early stalls come from losing state or spending a limited item, not from missing a secret mechanical trick.

  • Selling, cooking, gambling, or dropping an item that looks different from normal catch loot.
  • Starting a boss with no clear movement lane or recovery reserve.
  • Using a quest-provided trigger before checking equipment and difficulty.
  • Assuming the boss death completed the quest without returning its result to the requesting NPC.
  • Buying every visible upgrade instead of saving for the next route requirement.
  • Following a launch-day workaround without checking the current patch notes.
  • Treating a rare Drip appearance as the same system as an endangered quest catch.
  • Quitting after a crash without checking the current save behavior and available backup.
